METHYL ACETATE
~ also known as Tereton; 79-20-9; Devoton; Acetic acid methyl ester; Methyl ethanoate; etc. belongs to the family of Carboxylic Acid Esters. The global market for methyl acetate and other exempt solvents was valued at over USD 1.54 billion in 2016. It is expected to reach USD 2.42 billion in 2022 and grow at a CAGR of slightly above 3.0% between 2017 and 2022.
Chemical structure: C3H6O2 or CH3COOCH3. It is a carboxylate ester whose formula can also be written as MeOAc.
Properties: Methyl acetate is a non-polar (lipophilic) to weakly polar (hydrophilic) aprotic solvent. Methyl acetate has a solubility of 25% in water at room temperature. At elevated temperature, its solubility in water is much higher. Methyl acetate is not stable in the presence of strong aqueous bases or acids. Methyl acetate is VOC exempt.
Production:Â
- Methyl acetate is produced industrially via the carbonylation of methanol as a byproduct of the production of acetic acid.
- Methyl acetate is also produced by esterification of acetic acid with methanol in the presence of strong acids such as sulfuric acid.
Chemical reactions and Uses: In the presence of strong bases such as sodium hydroxide or strong acids such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid, it is hydrolyzed back into methanol and acetic acid, especially at elevated temperature.
Methyl acetate is used as a solvent in glues, paints, and nail polish removers, in chemical reactions, and for extractions.
