Cannabis impacts Sperm Counts, Motility in Two Generations of mice

Mice who were exposed to cannabis looked dope as hell but had seriously impacted sperm count. Image credit: Egoreichenkov Evgenii/3dsam79/Shutterstock.com

An intense but short-term exposure to cannabis vapor lowered sperm counts and slowed sperm movement, or motility, not only in the directly exposed male mice but also in their sons.

The Washington State University study, published in the journal Toxicological Sciences, builds on other human and animal studies, showing that cannabis can impede male reproductive function. The current study uses more controlled circumstances than human studies, which often have to rely on surveys, and is the first known reproductive study to use vaporized whole cannabis in mice, which is the more common form humans use...

New Research Sheds Light on Potentially Negative Effects of Cannabis

Overbaked: assessing and predicting acute adverse reactions to CannabisJournal of Cannabis Research, 2020; 2 (1) DOI: 10.1186/s42238-019-0013-x

Coughing fits, anxiety and paranoia are three of the most common adverse reactions to cannabis, according to a recent study by Washington State University researchers. They surveyed > 1,500 college students on the type and frequency of adverse reactions they had experienced while using cannabis for their study in the Journal of Cannabis Research. They also collected information on the students’ demographics, personality traits, cannabis use patterns and motives for using the drug.

“There’s been surprisingly little research on the prevalence or frequency of various adverse reactions to cannabis and almost no research trying to predict wh...

Exposure to Cannabis Alters the Genetic Profile of Sperm

“There’s something about cannabis use that affects the genetic profile in sperm. We don’t yet know what that means, but the fact that more and more young males of child-bearing age have legal access to cannabis is something we should be thinking about.”
— Scott Kollins, Ph.D.

Whether genetic changes can be reversed or are passed on to children is still unknown. New research from Duke Health suggests men in their child-bearing years should also consider how THC could impact their sperm and possibly the children they conceive during periods when they’ve been using the drug...
