Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have greater numbers of harmful mutations in their mitochondrial DNA than family members. Increasingly, studies point to malfunctions in mitochondria as a cause of autism spectrum disorder, but the biological basis for this relationship is unclear.
