2 Supermassive Black Holes found in Markarian 231, nearest quasar to Earth.

The discovery of 2 supermassive black holes – one larger one and a second, smaller one – are evidence of a binary black hole and suggests that supermassive black holes assemble their masses through violent mergers.

Professor Dai and Lu looked at UV radiation emitted from the center of the Mrk 231 from Hubble observations, then applied a model developed by Lu to the spectrum of the galaxy. As a result, they were able to predict the existence of the binary black holes in Mrk 231.

New research predicts that Earth has more than 1,500 undiscovered minerals and that the exact mineral diversity of our planet is unique and could not be duplicated anywhere in the cosmos. Minerals form from novel combinations of elements. Interstellar Seeds could Create Oases of Life

Astrophysicists now show that if life can travel between the stars ie panspermia it would spread in a characteristic pattern that we could potentially identify. “In our theory clusters of life form, grow, and overlap like bubbles in a pot of boiling water,” says lead author Henry Lin of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).

As they harbor rapidly growing black holes in their centers, these results give us clues for understanding the evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes. The research group discovered 48 DOGs, and measured how common they are using Subaru Strategic Program with Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC), a new wide-field camera with a field of view 9X the size of the moon.
