People with IBD have more Microplastics in their Feces

Higher numbers of microplastics of various shapes, such as sheets (left) and fibers (right) were found in the feces of people with IBD than in healthy controls.

Microplastics — tiny pieces of plastic less than 5 mm in length — are everywhere, from bottled water to food to air. According to recent estimates, people consume tens of thousands of these particles each year, with unknown health consequences. Now, researchers reporting in ACS’ Environmental Science & Technology found that people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have more microplastics in their feces than healthy controls, suggesting that the fragments could be related to the disease process.

The prevalence of IBD, which includes ...

How Regular Exercise can Protect Against Fatty Liver Asociated Diseases

 Training downregulates acetyl-CoA-generating pathways in the liver of high-energy diet-fed mice. Abundance of transcripts (gray/blue filled bars) and proteins (blank bars) related to glucose/fructose degradation, mitochondrial pyruvate metabolism, acetyl-CoA conversion and fatty acid synthesis. The mean Â± SD values for n = 6–8 are shown. ∗p < 0.05, ∗∗p < 0.01, ∗∗∗p < 0.001, ∗∗∗∗p < 0.0001 for diet, training or interaction by two-way ANOVA as indicated. ∗p < 0.05, ∗∗p < 0.01, ∗∗∗p < 0.001, ∗∗∗∗p < 0.0001 for diet, #p < 0.05, ##p < 0.01 for training by Tukey HSD multiple comparisons test. CON = control diet, HED = high-energy diet, SED = sedentary, TRAIN = treadmill training.

Gum Disease Increases Risk of other illness such as Mental Health and Heart Conditions, study suggests

A University of Birmingham-led study shows an increased risk of patients developing illnesses including mental ill-health and heart conditions if they have a GP-inputted medical history of periodontal (gum) disease.

Experts carried out a first of its kind study of the GP records of 64,379 patients who had a GP-inputted recorded history of periodontal disease, including gingivitis and periodontitis (the condition that occurs if gum disease is left untreated and can lead to tooth loss). Of these, 60,995 had gingivitis and 3,384 had periodontitis. These patients’ records were compared to those of 251,161 patients who had no record of periodontal disease. Across the cohorts, the average age was 44 years and 43% were male, while 30% were smokers...

Scientists identify Gut-derived Metabolites that play a role in Neurodegeneration

A new study has identified gut-derived metabolites that appear to be neurotoxic and play a role in the progression of multiple sclerosis. Credit: Nicoletta Barolini

A New York-based, multi-institutional research team has found high levels of three toxic metabolites produced by gut bacteria in the cerebrospinal fluid and plasma samples of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. The important findings, published in the journal Brain, further scientists’ understanding of how gut bacteria can impact the course of neurological diseases by producing compounds that are toxic to nerve cells.

Previously published evidence has supported the concept that an imbalance in the gut microbiota—the community of organisms that live in the human intestines—may underly a range of neurological disorders...
