Actinidia arguta (sarunashi) Juice Inhibits Lung Cancer in Mice, study finds

sarunashi

Using a mouse model, Japanese researchers unleash the likely mechanism of action of Sarunashi juice on lung cancer development. Among all the cancers, lung cancer has one of the lowest five-year survival rates. Smoking tobacco and using tobacco-based products is known to heavily contribute to the development of lung cancer. It is a clinically established fact that the active ingredients in various fruits minimize the risk of chronic diseases including cancer. “Sarunashi” (Actinidia arguta) is an edible fruit cultivated in Japan’s Okayama Prefecture. Using a mouse model, researchers from Okayama University led by Dr...

Time-restricted eating reshapes gene expression throughout the body

Time-restricted eating reshapes gene expression throughout the body. In this illustration, the Ferris wheel displays the interconnected organ systems working smoothly during time-restricted eating, which is represented by the clock in the middle.

Salk researchers find that timing calorie intake synchronizes circadian rhythms across multiple systems in mice. Scientists show in mice how time-restricted eating influences gene expression across more than 22 regions of the body and brain. The findings have implications for a wide range of health conditions where time-restricted eating has shown potential benefits, including diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and cancer.

Numerous studies have shown health benefits of time-restricted eating including increase in l...

Good Hydration Linked to Healthy Aging

Adults who stay well-hydrated appear to be healthier, develop fewer chronic conditions, such as heart and lung disease, and live longer than those who may not get sufficient fluids, according to a National Institutes of Health study published in eBioMedicine. Using health data gathered from 11,255 adults over a 30-year period, researchers analyzed links between serum sodium levels—which go up when fluid intake goes down—and various indicators of health. They found that adults with serum sodium levels at the higher end of a normal range were more likely to develop chronic conditions and show signs of advanced biological aging than those with serum sodium levels in the medium ranges...

Self-assembling Proteins can Store Cellular ‘Memories’

Using these engineered proteins, researchers can record histories that reveal when certain genes are activated, or how cells respond to a drug. As cells perform their everyday functions, they turn on a variety of genes and cellular pathways. MIT engineers have now coaxed cells to inscribe the history of these events in a long protein chain that can be imaged using a light microscope.

Cells programmed to produce these chains continuously add building blocks that encode particular cellular events...
