Absolute Zero in the Quantum Computer

When many quantum particles interact, complex systems can be formed. And this complexity allows reaching a temperature of absolute zero – at least in principle.

Erasing data perfectly and reaching the lowest possible temperature — those two things seem to be completely different, but they are closely intertwined. The absolute lowest temperature possible is -273.15 degrees Celsius. It is never possible to cool any object exactly to this temperature — one can only approach absolute zero. This is the third law of thermodynamics.

A research team at TU Wien (Vienna) has now investigated the question: How can this law be reconciled with the rules of quantum physics? They succeeded in developing a “quantum version” of the third law of thermodynamics: Theoretically, absolute ze...

Robotic Hand can Identify Objects with just One Grasp

Photo shows a robotic hand holding a Rubik's Cube. Four insets shows colorful renderings of the hand’s sensors.
MIT researchers developed a soft-rigid robotic finger that incorporates powerful sensors along its entire length, enabling them to produce a robotic hand that could accurately identify objects after only one grasp.

The three-fingered robotic gripper can ‘feel’ with great sensitivity along the full length of each finger — not just at the tips

Inspired by the human finger, MIT researchers have developed a robotic hand that uses high-resolution touch sensing to accurately identify an object after grasping it just one time.

Many robotic hands pack all their powerful sensors into the fingertips, so an object must be in full contact with those fingertips to be identified, which can take multiple grasps...

A New Integrated Solar Battery based on Carbon Nitride Photoanodes

A new integrated solar battery based on carbon nitride photoanodes

In recent years, researchers have been trying to create increasingly efficient solar technologies and more sustainable battery designs. Among emerging sustainable energy solutions are solar batteries, systems that can store the energy collected by solar cells or photovoltaic (PV) systems.

A research group at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research, supervised by Prof. Bettina Lotsch, recently introduced a sustainable integrated solar battery design based on materials that abundant on Earth. Their design, presented in a paper published in Energy & Environmental Science, is based on a bi-functional carbon nitride (K-PHI) photoanode that can both absorb light and store electric charge.

“The solar battery research field is still young and as such very diverse in concepts a...
